Fort Whoop-Up. In 1869, Two Traders From Fort Benton, Joe Healy And Al Hamilton, Built A Trading Post At The Junction Of The Belly And St. Mary'S Rivers, Southwest Of The Present City Of Lethbridge, Ab. The Following Year, It Was Partially Burned By Fire And A New Building Was Constructed About 300 Feet North Of The Original Site. First Called Fort Hamilton, It Was Soon Known As Fort Whoop-Up, The Most Notorious Of The Whiskey Forts Where Whiskey Pedlars And Other Unscrupulous White Men Traded With The Indians (Aboriginals). Here A Group Of Blood Indians Are Shown Outside The Fort While Overhead Flies The Flag Of One Of The Trading Companies |

Francis Evans Cornish, 1831-1878. Lawyer & Politician. Born In London, Upper Canada. Called To The Bar In 1855. Mayor Of London, Upper Canada From 1861- 1865. Moved To Winnipeg In 1872. That Same Year Was Called To The Bar In Manitoba. Was Elected First Mayor Of City Of Winnipeg In 1874 Defeating W.F. Luxton By A Small Majority. The Aldermen Elected Were Thomas Scott, Herbert Swinford And James Mclenaghen, South Ward; Archibald Wright,J.H. Ashdown And John Higgins, West Ward; Andrew Strang, W.B. Thibaudeau And Stewart Mulvey, East Ward, And Alex Logan, W.G. Fonseca And J.B. More, North Ward. He Died In 1878 In Winnipeg And Was Buried In Brookside Cemetery. The Cornish Library In Winnipeg Was Named After Him |
